Cold Forging

“Aarya Industries” produce high-quality forged parts for the industry. We forge all types of steel, stainless steel and aluminium alloys.  Cold forging improves the strength of the metal by hardening it at room temperature

It’s a metal shaping & manufacturing process in which bar stock is inserted into a die and squeezed into a second closed die. The process, completed is at room temperature or below the metal’s recrystallization temperature to form a metal into a desired shape or configuration.

Cold forging is the process of choice when a precise result is required using solid forging. One of the main advantages of cold forming is its low energy consumption. Since the workpiece does not have to be heated for machining, the manufacturing process is very energy-efficient. Due to the cold manufacturing process, there is no scaling of the surface, which is a further quality advantage of the workpiece.

Advantages of "Cold Forging"

1. Faster production

Cold forging is a simple process where the workpiece is placed directly in the forging machine to instantly produce a finished part.

2. Environmentally friendly

The main reason cold forging is environmentally friendly is the removal of the need for heat since the fumes and smoke from furnaces produces significant carbon emissions.

3. Superior product performance

Cold forging produces products with superior performance because it rearranges the grain structure of the workpiece to follow the configuration of the final part.

4. Wide choice of metals

A wide range of metals can be forged, which includes hard metals like carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel as well as soft metals like aluminum, brass, and copper.

5. Increased quality and long life

Cold forged parts are capable of handling high stress. When the workpiece is forced beyond its yield or elastic limit, it is still able to retain its altered shape.

6. Design freedom

Unlike other processes, cold forging allows design freedom where intricate contours and shapes can be produced that would require many different and costly secondary methods in other processes.

7. High production output

Though there may be variations between cold forging production methods, the high manufacturing speed of cold forging can produce as many as 50 pieces per minute up to over 400. The only thing to influence the speed of the process is the size of the part.

FAQ's on "Cold Forging"

Cold forging is one of the most widely used chipless forming processes, often requiring no machining other than drilling. The commonly accepted definition is the forming or forging of a bulk material at room temperature with no heating of the initial slug or inter-stages.

Cold forging deforms metal while it is below its recrystallization point. Cold forging increases tensile strength some and yield strength substantially while reducing ductility. Cold forging usually takes place near room temperature.

Cold forging improves the strength of the metal by hardening it at room temperature, whereas Hot forging results in optimal yield strength, low hardness, and high ductility by hardening the metal at extremely high temperatures.

The hot forging temperature for stainless steels is 1700-2300°F, depending on the specific grade. … While work-hardening readily occurs in almost all metals at room temperature, stainless steels exhibit more hardening than most other metal alloys. This means that “cold” forging requires very high forging loads.

  • No heating is required in cold forging processes.
  • This forging process offers a better interchangeability as well as reproducibility.
  • A better surface finish is achieved and contamination problems experienced are minimized.
  • Cold forging offers a superior dimensional control.
  • The capability to impart directional properties onto the metal being formed.

  • The production of an undesired residual stress.
  • Metals forged are less ductile and higher forces are required during cold forging processes.
  • Because of the higher forces required in this process, heavier and more powerful equipment is needed as well as stronger tooling.
  • Though capable of imparting directional properties onto the metal, these properties may be detrimental.
  • The surfaces of the metals used must be clean and scale free.
  • Because of the loss of ductility that accompanies strain hardening, intermediate anneals may be required.
